Skye is one of my most favourite places in Scotland to visit… and to take visitors. It is wild and beautiful, exciting and utterly unique. It has dramatic scenery and wonderful, gentle people.
Its heritage of gaelic culture and music can be traced for hundreds of years; its reputation for wonderful food and hospitality fulfils modern day expectations.
When the weather is at its best the scenery will astound you with every vista you see; at its worst, when the mist descends upon the Cuillins, you will feel its power and its brooding melancholy. Whatever the weather… you will never forget your visit to Skye and it will remain in your memory forever.
This tour is five days long but can be shortened or extended as required.
Travel north west through wonderful scenery. Views of both Stirling and Doune Castles... the latter famous for its role in the film THE HOLY GRAIL and more recently OUTLANDER based on the books by Diana Gabaldon. We would continue on through magnificent Glen Coe and stop overnight in the area close to the Glenfinnan Monument and Glenfinnan Viaduct which was used in several Harry Potter films.
Leave by ferry from fishing village of Mallaig and travel “over the sea to Skye”. Arrive in the south of the island and travel north around the coast, past Portree and up to the amazing Trotternish peninsula. Wonderful views of the Cuillin mountains, Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, Dinosaur Coast and much more. Stay overnight in Portree area.
Explore Vaternish with its potteries, artist studios, Dunvegan Castle and Talisker Distillery. Lots to choose from and the astounding views of The Cuillin Mountains while driving south towards the famous bridge at Sligachan. Leave the island by the Skye Bridge with magnificent views to the mainland beyond. Stay overnight in village of Dornie, overlooking Eilean Donan Castle.
Visit Eilean Donan Castle, ancient stronghold of the Mackenzies and another castle “film star” for its roles in Highlander and in Bond films. Drive west through Glen Shiel with views of the magnificent mountain range, The Five Sisters and then to the famous Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge. Having driven past Loch Laggan and Ardverikie which featured in the TV series, Monarch of The Glen we will continue through the dramatic Pass of Drumochter to the Pitlochry area where we will spend the night.
Explore the surrounding area... Blair Castle and its beautiful gardens, the picturesque Highland town of Pitlochry, a choice of three distilleries and a chocolatier. Waterfalls, rivers and lochs abound… you will be spoilt for choice. Travel south past Loch Leven Castle and back to Edinburgh with views of magnificent Forth Rail Bridge.
