If there is anything that evokes the spirit of Scotland; it is the grandeur and history of its castles... from those that perch on top of volcanic crags to others that stand amidst the purple heather. From the imposing and magnificent Stirling Castle to the small and simple Lochleven Castle.
One feature they all share is that they stand amidst the most beautiful scenery imaginable and on this personal tour of Scottish Castles and Gardens, it would be my privilege to share these wonders with you...
In the capital itself we have Edinburgh Castle which stands proudly overlooking the city; the earliest part dating back to the 1100's. In the close vicinity we have others such as Blackness, Craigmillar, Neidpath, Aberdour and many more.
Venturing a little further afield we come to Stirling Castle, described in ancient times as “The Key to the Kingdom” - more recently featured in the film, Braveheart. Then there is Doune, Inveraray, Kilchurn, Dunstaffnage, Castle Stalker, beautiful Eilean Donan... and many more.
Scottish Castles Guided Tour
If we were to go in a more northerly direction from Edinburgh we would pass Lochleven Castle... the scene of Mary Queen of Scot's imprisonment and eventual escape. In Highland Perthshire there is Blair Castle, home to The Dukes of Atholl; in Royal Deeside there are Braemar and Balmoral, Cawdor and Corgaff.
These are only a tiny number of the hundreds of castles in Scotland.... too many to mention but lots of choice to explore...
Combine the beauty of the castles and the scenery with some of the incredible gardens found in Scotland... and you will never want to leave!
Scottish Gardens Guided Tour
Again, on your personal tour I will introduce you to the many varied gardens around the country; from the tranquil beauty of the Japanese gardens at Lauriston Castle in Edinburgh to the more rugged gardens at Cluny House in Perthshire with its abundance of rare red squirrels.
Or perhaps you would enjoy the stunning renaissance gardens of Falkland Palace, the hunting palace of the Stewart kings, or at Drummond gardens in Crieff with its magnificent Italian style parterre in the shape of a saltire.
Hercules garden at Blair Castle is a particular favourite of mine as are the gardens at Glamis Castle. But we cannot forget the beauties of the west coast with Inverewe, Arduaine, Ardmaddy or Crarae... all stunningly beautiful in Spring especially.
