Highland Perthshire and The Spey Valley… the perfect combination. Combining stays in these two areas will provide a wonderful experience in two different areas of the Highlands. They are perfect bases for an unforgettable tour of Scotland.
The Pitlochry area, in Perthshire, has been popular with tourists from the time of Queen Victoria. It is an area of wonderful waterfalls, rivers, mountains and lochs. There are castles and crannogs (iron age water dwellings) distilleries, shopping, art galleries, chocolatiers, unique crafts people to meet and wonderful restaurants in which to savour the very best of Scottish food and hospitality.
After an unforgettable few days there we would drive up the Great North Road to the picturesque town of Grantown on Spey in Speyside. Founded in 1765, it was one of the first planned towns in Scotland. It sits within The Cairngorm national park which was recently described by National Geographic as “One of the last wildernesses in Europe”.
There is much to explore... from the Highland Folk Museum at Newtonmore to the ruins of Ruthven barracks with its Jacobite rebellion connections. Speyside is considered to be at the heart of the Whisky Trail and is also home to an outstanding range of Scottish wildlife. In addition there is some of the best fishing and golfing in the country.
As unique experiences go there is nothing to surpass a sheepdog demonstration from a real shepherd with views of the Cairngorm mountains as a backdrop... or sitting watching enchanting, native red squirrels from the comfort of a tearoom serving the most divinely, delicious cakes.
It is also a perfect base to explore areas such as Loch Ness, Elgin, Nairn, Culloden Battlefield, Fort George, Clava Cairns... and many more wonderful places.
There is a wide range of accommodation to suit your preference. All chosen to give you the very best Scottish experience. A stay of at least three or four days in each area would be ideal but length of stay can vary to suit your own wishes. Examples of the types of accommodation are below
